Want to Learn Web Design Basics? Start Here
First, you'll need a working knowledge of how to code
a page in HTML. Then, you'll need to be able to use CSS to create the visual
effects you want, whether that's a particular layout, typography, or colors and
backgrounds.
Fortunately, Envato Tuts+ instructor Kezz Bracey has
put together a series of beginner courses that cover all those topics in depth,
giving you a solid foundation from which to build up to more advanced web
design skills. Here's a rundown of those courses and what you can learn.
1. Start Here: Learn HTML Basics
The most critical first step to becoming a web
designer is learning how to code HTML. By the end of this short course you’ll
know what HTML is, how it works, and how to use its most common elements.
You’ll go from a blank slate to having your first fully functioning, basic
hand-coded page. This will give you the fundamental foundation on which all
your future designs can be built.
2. Start Here: Learn CSS Typography
If you’re a budding web designer and you’re ready to
learn CSS, then start here!
If there’s one kind of styling which is arguably more
important than any other in web design, it’s typography. Ideally, your sites
should begin with solid typography, and the rest of the design should be built
around that. For this reason, it’s important to understand the typographic
portion of the design process first.
3. Start Here: Learn CSS Layout
Now that you’ve learned the essentials of typography
in the previous “Start Here” course, you’re ready to move on to the next
fundamental element of web design: layout.
In this course you’ll learn everything you need to
know to create the most common types of layouts in web design.
4. Start Here: Learn CSS Colors and Backgrounds
In this installation of our “Start Here” series,
you’re going to breathe some life into the site you’ve been creating by using
CSS colors and backgrounds.
In this course you’ll learn all about the visual
techniques that make sites stand out from one another, and bring the “design”
into web design.
